Persicaria 'Fascination'
A good plant for medium to heavy soils, flowering in summer with sedums, echinacea, rudbeckia and heleniums; fills nicely in the perennial border and amongst ornamental grasses
Phlomis russeliana
An herbaceous Phlomis with large heart-shaped leaves eventually forming a large clump 1 metre across. Whorls of lemon yellow flowers on thick upright stems during summer followed by attractive seed heads. Very tough once established.
Phlox maculata 'Omega'
Tall white phlox with delicious perfume, flowering in summer. Best in fertile conditions protected from afternoon sun.
Rudbeckia 'Sundance'
A very late flowering variety with tall wiry stems and in its early stages an interesting tight flower bud, providing a similar effect to craspedia globosa. Attractive low basal foliage, and a sculptural interesting plant for late summer groupings.
Rudbeckia lacianata
One of our favourite late season rudbeckias, a tall late summer flowering variety with lemon yellow green centred flowers on strong rigid stems, ideally suited to heavier soil types.
Rudbeckia maxima
Fantastic perennial unlike anything else. Large yellow sombrero-shaped daisies on 1.8 metre stems with large blue grey leaves. Focal point for the back of a mixed border or a feature in a prairie garden.
Salvia mexicana 'Limelight'
One of my favourite salvias, which always looks great in the autumn. The flowers are lime-green and in exhuberant clusters like something tropical. Responds well to good soil.
Sanguisorba parviflora
Terrific tall variety, white flowering. Basal foliage produces dozens of 2m flower spikes, superb summer flowering background, plant in heavier fertile soil, shorter in less ideal conditions.
Scabiosa atropurpurea
Impressive cottage garden plant and cut flower, perennial in well drained soil, but easily reproduced by seed or cuttings.
Teucrium fruticans
Drought hardy silver foliage plant for topiary and background, use in place of Italian lavenders which are disappointing and die out after a few years. Attractive blue flowers, drought tolerant.
Thalictrum dipterocarpum 'Alba'
Rarely seen white form, similar cultivation as for the usual mauve form in part shade.
Verbena bonariensis
Late summer filler for perennial border, flowering from summer into winter. An easy plant that will in fill nicely between penstemons, euphorbias and dahlias. Dead head to prolong flowering, purple flowers on tall airy stems.
Veronicastrum virginicum
A handsome plant with attractive palmate foliage on straight stems, topped with 30 cm spikes of pale pink Veronica flowers. Best in a moist fertile spot.
Agastache 'Blue Fortune'
Terrific long flowering agastache, distinct from Blue Boa with narrower conical flowers and more blue in colour. Prefers open drainage and good soil, as per other agastache.
Agastache mexicana 'Sangria'
Rose pink flowers in mid summer, great foliage aroma, makes amazing tea which is sweet like licorice. Add spear mint or thyme for cold drinks, add to salad, etc.
Agave americana
Larger agave, but still slow growing like most in a temperate climate. Attractive blue tinged erect saw toothed leaves.
Allium 'Mnt Everest'
Superb tall drumstick type allium with white flowers, ensure very well drained soil and not too wet in winter and dry in summer, especially after flowering
Anemone 'Sweetly'
A vigorous semi double windflower for part or full shade, spreads well in mass planting or individually in shady garden corners or under deciduous shrubs. Flowers late summer.
Angelica sylvestris 'Purpurea'
Tall, decorative late summer flowering purple biennial, introduced to us by Karen Hall. Treat like Angelica gigas, often takes three years to flower then self seeds.
