Native to Japan, a lower growing variety with attractive lobed leaves and pink bottlebrush flowers. In Australia part shade is best, on fertile clay or moisture retentive soil.
Slender wiry stems topped with lolly pink pompoms about the size of a mulberry, flowering for months in summer. Like other sanguisorba they are drought tolerant, but like some clay below the surface.
Low growing bedding and border plant with blue flowers, lasts well in a vase and keeps producing if deadheaded.
A recent introduction by us is this sedum from my mothers garden, with white flowers, which is an unusual colour in the world of sedums! As with other sedums, easy to grow in full sun position in most soil types. Rarely but occasionally these can produce a pale pink sport, which should be removed with a sharp knife at the crown at the time of flowering.
A Sedum spectabile cultivar with dark terracotta red flowers. Upright habit, always reliable for late summer and autumn colour.
Like a low version of 'Autumn Joy' more suited to foreground plantings. Magenta pink flowers in autumn, bee and butterfly attracting, frost and drought tolerant.
Brilliant new variety with dark foliage ; strength and upright growth habit of 'Matrona' but the darker foliage of 'Purple Emperor' and red flowers.
Superb dark foliage variety, slightly darker in colour than 'Purple Emperor' with a strong mounding habit.
Upright intermediate between 'Autumn Joy' and 'Purple Emperor', green foliage infused with purple, darkening as the season progresses. Rich pink and rose colours late in summer, wonderful amongst grasses and salvias.
One of our favourite new sedums with deep maroon and grape purple foliage. Similar in size and as easy as "Autumn Joy". Flowers start deep pink and turn terracotta, followed by wonderful seed heads in autumn.
Delightful variety from Wychwood, lovely range of foliage colour including greys, purples and pinks. Distinct from 'Matrona' and 'Purple Emperor', with lower more branched form. Looks good all year both in pots and in the ground. My favourite sedum.
A beautiful grass from Peru where it grows on elevated dry plateau on gravelly ground. In Australia it tends to flower autumn to winter, and prefers to dry off in summer, although in mild areas it seems to flower continuously if dead headed. Cut older plants back to half after flowering once growth begins to show signs of drying off. The white flowers...
Attractive perennial resembling a veronica in flower, with showy deep pink flower spikes and sage like leaves. A versatile plant for border or cottage garden.
Lemon thyme, great for savoury meat dishes and marinades, also a long flowering ornamental garden plant. Larger than most ground-covering types, it forms a 30 cm mound and flowers well in summer even in dry conditions. Ideal for mass planting amongst stones with paeonies and crocus. Pink flowers.
Medium height with stongly vertical stems of rich pink flowers in summer, easy plant for the cottage garden.
Pink form of Veronica longifolia, a good perennial groundcover under roses and amongst other perennials.
Old fashioned perennial flowering in summer, with cobalt blue spikes and ground covering habit. Easy amongst geraniums, Dianthus, and helianthemums.
A recent release from our trial beds, begins as brighter musk pink then fades to soft pink then eventually cream, subtle and lovely and multicoloured tones as the flowers age. Easily cultivated like other yarrows in full sun.
A spectacular succulent shrublet, wonderful in pots or in the ground. The foliage is a deep purple black and plants grow well in hot or dry areas; great for under eaves, on decks and other dry or exposed situations.
