Many garden perennials are in fact ancient herbs which were once widely used in herbal folk medicine, and now have been forgotten with the widespread distribution of modern pharmaceuticals. Currant Black

Ancient long cultivated food plant which provides delicious berries as well as leaves that can be used for tea and medicinal purposes. Easy to grow.

Echinacea pallida

Close relative of Echinacea angustifolia, also used in herbal medicine, sharing many similarities. I find it a better garden plant, more vigorous and productive in growth, and manages better in winter wet.

Aloe vera

Every household should have a pot of this growing on a windowsill somewhere! Break off the leaves and squash the gel onto cuts, burns and skin irritations, it works wonders. Grows best in dry shade.

Cynara scolymus. Attractive perennial, useful for its flowers which make delicious eating when harvested prior to flowering. Cut down after harvesting to promote resprouting in autumn.

Monarda didyma. Ancient medicinal plant, the red flowers often used for calming teas and infusions. Bee and butterfly attracting, attractive in mixed herbal and flower border plantings, easy in clay based soil types.
